The ongoing hunger strike against the SIR process in Thakurnagar has entered a critical phase as the health of several activists deteriorates. Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Bala Thakur, who returned from Delhi on Monday, went straight to the Bangaon Sub-Divisional Hospital to meet the ill protesters. She met 65-year-old Nitai Mondal, a resident of Ghola village in Nadia district, who was admitted after falling seriously ill during the fast. Thakur assured Mondal’s family of all possible assistance and expressed solidarity with the movement.
Mamata Bala Thakur had been away in Delhi for official work, but upon her return, she immediately met the affected activists and is expected to visit the protest site in Thakurnagar next. The hunger strike, led by members of the Matua community, has continued for several days, with participants alleging that the SIR process has created fear and confusion among marginalized communities regarding their citizenship and identity.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that representatives of the All India Matua Mahasangh recently met Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Delhi. Chowdhury reportedly assured them of his support, saying he stands with the Matua community and will raise their concerns in Parliament. He is also likely to visit the Thakurnagar protest site soon, which could give the movement fresh political momentum.
Local administration has deployed additional police forces in Bangaon and Thakurnagar to maintain peace. Officials say the situation is being closely monitored as the protest continues to gain intensity, with Mamata Bala Thakur’s intervention reviving the morale of the agitators.
